We attended the first official "Schofield Family Reunion" June 26th-July 1st in sunny (and hot) St. George, Utah. The reunion had been in the works for quite some time, and we had about half of Frank's siblings and their families attend. It was great! When we first got there, we jumped right into the pool, and didn't leave...well, okay, we were in it alot because it was soooo very hot!
On Friday, we swam in the pool, and then that afternoon Frank and I attended a temple sessions with his younger brother Joseph and his wife Crystal. On Saturday we ventured a short 20 minute drive northwest of St. George to Snow Canyon State Park. While there we hiked down to some old lava tubes. There was a little more hiking than anticipated to get to the tubes, and a very steep fall, I mean wall of rock to get down to the actual lava tubes. But once inside, Frank and the boys said it was quite cool (literally) and dark, and rocky. After getting back to the timeshare, it was once again (you guessed it) into the pool! We all went out to dinner as a family (all 17 of us). Later, Frank and I attended the musical Les Miserables at the Tuachan Amphitheatre, which I highly encourage anyone to attend a play at. It was not only a great play, but a fantastic atmosphere with the red cliffs as a natural backdrop.
On Sunday, we lucked out in attending a senior branch of people 55+. So, as we were warmly welcomed, we were also told there were no youth or primary classes, so we just attended Sacrament meeting, and then went back to the timeshare. Sunday evening we went to the St. George temple grounds to walk around and Vistor's Center. While there, they were having the final showing of sculptor Angela Johnson's bronze sculptures of Christ, they were beautiful.
On Monday, we all headed to the arcade and billiard room of the time share to shoot the breeze and play some games. After lunch, two of the families had to leave, but Frank's mom, Kendra, and another sister-in-law attended Jacob Hamblin's home in Santa Clara and Brigham Young's Winter home back in St. George. When Kendra was growing up, St. George was always just a pass through city, she had never been to these wonderful historic sites, and was glad to have taken the opportunity to do so on this trip. On Tuesday, it was one more jump in the pool before heading home. What a fun family reunion week!
